Tropaeolum (Tropaeolum majus L.) is an annual herbaceous plant from the Tropaeolaceae family. The stem is creeping, branched, grows up to 3 meters long. The leaves are green, on a long petiole, round in shape and slightly irregular at the edge, densely permeated with pronounced light and small veins, they are located on long, winding petioles. The flowers are bell-shaped, have 5 bright red or yellow petals, bloom all summer and early autumn until the first frosts. Habitat It is native to South America (Bolivia, Colombia), and was introduced to Europe at the beginning of the 17th century. It is cultivated in gardens all over the world as an ornamental and edible plant. In some places it has escaped from gardens and grows wild.
The flowers and leaves are edible, with a delicious, spicy taste. It is better to pick the leaves when they are smaller. They are rich in vitamin C (about 300 mg%), are a good source of iron and are eaten fresh as a salad or plucked every time we pass by the flower bed. The flower buds and unripe fruits can be preserved in vinegar.
