Origin and History of Maca

Maca (Lepidium meyenii), also known as Peruvian ginseng, originates from the Andes Mountains of Peru. This herbaceous biennial plant has been cultivated for approximately 2000 years. Maca thrives at altitudes above 3800 meters and can withstand temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius. The primary reason for cultivating Maca is its root, which can vary significantly in size and shape. There are three main varieties of Maca: Yellow, Red, and Black, with Yellow being the most commonly used.

Maca was originally a tuber and was even fed to horses by the Incas on the advice of the Spaniards, quickly revitalizing the animals.

In the Junín region of Peru, Maca is an essential and nutritious food source. It is consumed fresh, often in combination with meat, cooked in underground ovens with hot stones (Pachamancas), or dried and ground into Maca flour for use in baked goods or porridge in milk. A popular drink made from Maca is called "Maca Chica."

Processing of Maca Powder

The seeds of Maca are sown in September, about a month before the rainy season begins. Sowing is done early in the morning to avoid strong mountain winds. After sowing, the seeds are covered with branches or sheep are released to tread them into the ground. After 260 to 280 days, the plants are ready for harvest. The roots are excavated and dried in the sun for 10-15 days.

The dried Maca roots can be stored for up to seven years. They are then ground into a fine powder, which has a beige color.

Benefits of Maca

Maca is rich in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and essential amino acids. It has a sweet, nutty flavor and can be added to various beverages, baked goods, and soups.
